Women's March Vs Donald Trump: Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia Becomes Symbol of Hope Among Protesters

By

Fan-favorite character Princess Leia from ‘Star Wars’ came out as one of the feminist figures and symbols of hope at the Women’s March against President Donald Trump on Saturday. The memory of Carrie Fisher’s character was raised during the protest a day after he was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.

Fans and supporters of Princess Leia came out to the streets with posters and photos with the feminist character’s face printed on them as they shared messages such as “We are the resistance” and “Estrogen Strikes Back,” among others. Many protesters at the Women’s March were also decked out in Princess Leia costumes as they rallied against Trump. Mark Hamill, ‘Star Wars’ co-star and close friend of Fisher, took to Twitter and shared photos from the Women’s March. He captioned his post with: “I know where she stood. You know where she stood. Such an honour to see her standing with you today. Bigly."

Fisher, who died from a heart attack at 60 years old last month, openly expressed her views as a feminist. These include speaking out against people who criticize aging actors, including herself, and their opinions over her character’s well-known metal bikini costume for ‘Star Wars.’

The actress-turned-writer was equally vocal when it came to opposing Trump during his election campaign. On Twitter, she called him out many times for being a “misogynist” as well as a “classless thug.” Therefore, being a symbol of resistance and feminism, Fisher’s image as Leia being used at the Women’s March was not surprising for many.

"I'm not as cooperative as you might want a woman to be," Fisher previously said.

The Women's March over the weekend saw protests take place in over 60 countries as women, together with their partners and children, swarmed out to the streets to show their opposition against Trump's presidency a day after the presidential inauguration. Among the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators who marched, a good number of celebrities also came out to protest, including Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Miley Cyrus, Helen Mirren and Natalie Portman, to name a few.
