Jessica Alba's Honest Company Sued Again Over Organic Baby Formula

By

Honest Company, which was co-founded by 'Barely Lethal' actress Jessica Alba, was hit with another lawsuit this time over its organic baby formula. The lawsuit claims that the company's infant formula has 11 synthetic substances that are harmful to babies.

In a report by Fortune, the lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court by the Organic Consumers Association. The Minnesota-based organization said they represent the views of 850,000 members, subscribers, and volunteers regarding organic product matters.

The product of Honest Company, Organic Infant Formula, is alleged of having a host of synthetic ingredients. Among the 40 listed substances are sodium selenite, which is an extremely hazardous and synthetic compound; cholecalciferol, an irradiated substance; and calcium pantothenate, which is said to be a synthetic compound that is produced from formaldehyde.

Taurine is also claimed to be in the formula milk. The association said that insufficient taurine could result in subpar fat digestion and absorption in infants. It also is a synthetic additive that is associated with negative brain and nervous system effects in animals.

The lawsuit says that 11 ingredients of the Organic Infant Formula are being questioned as they do not appear on the National List. The list identifies nonagricultural substances that can be used in organic products. The lawsuit insists the company violated the California Organic Products Act of 2003 as they labeled the product as organic.

According to CNN, Honest Company claimed on their website that the infant formula is "meticulously blended using non-GMO (genetically engineered), naturally-derived, organic and other high-quality ingredients, sourced from trusted organic farms" in order to assure that the product is of quality goodness, pure, and safe.

ABC News reported that Honest Company said their Organic Infant Formula is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and that it meets all the safety and nutritional standards. It is also certified by the USDA Organic. They are confident that the lawsuit will be dismissed.

Back in February, a lawsuit was also filed against Honest Company saying they falsely and deceptively labeled their cleaning products 'natural' when they allegedly contain toxic ingredients.
