Sprint had officially started to release the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update on its versions of Samsung Galaxy S5. Units of other mobile networks in the United States are predicted to follow suit very soon.
Samsung Galaxy S5 units under Sprint have begun receiving the official over-the-air (OTA) update of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow since April 7 and is expected to cap off come May 19. The 2014 flagship phone had been waiting for the official Marshmallow update for almost seven months now since it was announced for upgrade.
Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for Galaxy S5 units originally began in South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago. Sprint is the first U.S. carrier to release it on the device.
The upgrade brought Google and Samsung's security updates on top of the bug fixes. It only weighs 900MB. The update was also released on Galaxy S5 Sport. Sprint already released Marshmallow on other Samsung devices and some devices from other OEMs, including Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy Note 4; LG G4 and G Stylo; and HTC One M9 and One M8.
Meanwhile, there are no solid information yet as of this time as to when other mobile carriers would really release Marshmallow on their Galaxy S5 units. However, as it was reported on IB Times, mobile carriers like Verizon Wireless, AT&T, US Cellular and T-Mobile are slated for the release of Marshmallow this month.
Marshmallow's OTA update comes in phases which means some units will receive the update later than the others depending on location, carrier, etc. Head over to Settings > About phone > Check software version to see if the device is already eligible for the upgrade.
Aside from Google's features for Android Marshmallow, Samsung and mobile carriers are expected to bring about their tweaks as well for the device. Unfortunately, Sprint did not boast anything new and unique this time unlike T-Mobile and Verizon.
