Palestinians Seek UN Resolution Against Israeli Settlements

By

The Palestinian UN Mission has confirmed that Palestine have already given the arab nations a UN Security Council resolution. The resolution centers on the Israeli settlement, which they believe is an obstacle to the peace process.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel was quick to condemn the proposal. Netanyahu said that President Mahmoud Abbas is creating different ways to put the peace process off track. The government of Palestine however did not give any details on the said resolution but reassured that the Security Council has unanimously voted on the issue as per ABC News.

As reported by the Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu accused Abbas of avoiding direct negotiations. The Israeli Prime Minister said that the only way to achieve peace is through a direct arbitration. Netanyahu also pointed out that the Palestinians are educating their children on a daily basis that the settlements are Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Acre.

The first resolution that was voted by the majority of the Security Council justifying that the Israeli settlement was illegal was vetoed by the US in 2011. During the Middle East war in 1967, Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem. In 2005, Jerusalem vacated Gaza but still has 600,000 Israeli settlers in the area of east Jerusalem and the West Bank.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, since the beginning of the peace process, the settlers that Israel had almost doubled. According to Peace Now, an Israeli non-government organization, the construction of 1800 housing units began in 2015. Since then, there have been several expansions that were created. Palestinians, on the other hand, claim the disputed area as part of their future state.

Danny Danon, a U.N Ambassador, said the only way to help the negotiations start is by letting the Palestinians condemn terrorism and stop encouraging it. He added that Palestine still continues to deceive the international community by making moves that do not help in improving the lives of the people in both countries.
