The woman in Mississippi who made an attempt to join the Islamic State militant group in Syria pleaded guilty on supporting the terror group. The said woman and her fiancé was about to board a flight to Istanbul when authorities arrested the couple in August.
Jaelyn Young, 20-years old told a federal judge in Aberdeen, Mississippi, on Tuesday, that she planned her trip to the Islamic State country, Syria along with her fiancé, Muhammad Dakhlalla, according to CBS News.
Young and Dakhlalla purchased a flight ticket to Istanbul using her mother's credit card, and were arrested before getting on a flight from Columbus, Mississippi to Istanbul. Investigators said, the pair contacted an undercover federal agent in May, inquiring information on how to get to Syria. US authorities also said, Young sought to disguise her trip to Syria as her honeymoon.
Young pleaded guilty to one count of "conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization."It was after she wrote a farewell letter to her family, saying she was guilty. Dakhlalla, 22, has also pleaded guilty to the same charges, ABC News reported.
Both were former students of Mississippi State University, according to Clarion-Ledger. Dalkhalla studied psychology and graduated last year, while Young was a former chemistry student on her sophomore year. She was also a former honor student, cheerleader and homecoming maid at Vicksburg's Warren Central High School.
It was also revealed that Young expressed her support for the terror group, rejoicing over the news of the shooting of five members of the military in Chattanooga, Tennessee, authorities said.
Young, who was a daughter of a school administrator and a police officer who served in the Navy reserve, faces up to 20 years in prison and lifetime probation. She converted to Islam while studying at Mississippi State University. Prosecutors said Young persuaded Dakhlalla to make the journey to Syria.
