'Star Trek Beyond' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film intended as the follow-up to J.J. Abrams' 2013 release 'Star Trek Into Darkness'. A new surprise character has been added even after filming ended months ago. Director Justin Lin is set to reshoot some scenes before the scheduled July 22 premiere.
According to The Independent, the upcoming thirteenth film in the highly popular 'Star Trek' franchise gained a brand new surprise character several months after director Justin Lin wrapped principal photography. Oscar-nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo will take on the role of High Command of the Federation.
Aghdashloo is known for numerous roles in theater but earned critical acclaim for her work in 2003's 'House of Sand and Fog', where she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as a win for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female and a Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress among others. She also appeared on films such as 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', 'The Lake House', 'X-Men: The Last Stand', 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green' and 'The Adjustment Bureau'.
According to Trek Today, the Iranian-American actress joins the cast which includes Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban. 'Star Trek Beyond' is scheduled for some reshoots for her scenes before the scheduled July 22, 2016 premiere in the United States. Principal photography began on June 2015 in Vancouver and initially wrapped on October of the same year.
The upcoming film is intended as a follow-up to J.J. Abram's 'Star Trek Into Darkness', which was released in 2013. Lin has taken over the directorial role while Abrams stayed on as producer. Simon Pegg, who plays Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, has also returned to pen the screenplay together with Doug Jung, John D. Payne, Patrick McKay and Roberto Orci.
According to an article on Red Shirts Always Die, 'Star Trek Into Darkness' was deemed controversial for die-hard 'Star Trek' fans. Although it was a financial and mainstream success, grossing $467 million worldwide, it was criticized for having underwhelming special effects and a bland storyline.
The reaction to the recently released 'Star Trek Beyond' trailer wasn't too optimistic for the franchise's waiting fans either. Pegg reassured fans that what they saw was merely a shallow peek at the upcoming film and that they should be "patient".
'Star Trek Beyond' is the thirteenth film in the series and is directed by Justin Lin of 'Furious 7' fame. It is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016.
