Samsung Galaxy S7 Release: Benchmark Reveals Snapdragon 820 Variant Performs Better Than Exynos 8899 Model

By

The freshly unveiled Samsung Galaxy S7 arrives in two variants, one with a Snapdragon chipset and the other one with an Exynos processor. Recently, a benchmark testing revealed that Snapdragon 820 variation is better than the Exynos 8899 version.

According to Pocket-lint, the UK and European market would get the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge that features Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 8 Octa processor, while other regions would have these smartphone that run on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.

Recently, a benchmark tests published by AnTuTu indicated that both the CPU and GPU of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 outperform its equivalents in the Exynos 8 found in the UK models of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

For reference, Digital Trends noted that the Exynos 8890 is an octa-core made up of four Cortex-A53 cores and four Samsung-made Exynos M1 cores. On the other hand, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is a quad-core processor made up of four Qualcomm-made Kyro cores with two high-performances and two low-power. As for the GPU, the Exynos 8890 is paired with a Mali T880MP12 while the Snapdragon 820 uses an Adreno 530.

Some tech enthusiasts stated that AnTuTu don't necessarily show what users will experience in the real world since it's unknown what devices the processors were running on. However, a report confirms the difference between the two GPUs after running the AnTuTu Benchmark app on both models. Nevertheless, it is still not a clear indication that consumers will be able to perceive the difference, but it's upsetting to see such an inequality between models.

Moreover, speed isn't the only difference between the processors. Unlike the Snapdragon 820, the Exynos 8890 isn't compatible with Quick Charge 3.0. This is because Samsung has decided to keep the models consistent, so it disabled Quick Charge 3.0 on all the Snapdragon variants, thus, making all its handsets compatible with Quick Charge 2.0.

As a refresher BizTalk Mojo cited the specs of Samsung Galaxy S7. This handset features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED Screen with 1440 x 2560 pixels at 577 pixels per inch pixel density. It is armed with 4GB of RAM, 32 / 64 GB internal storage that can be further expanded up to 200 GB via microSD card, a 12 MP rear camera with f/1.7 Aperture, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), LED flash, phase detection autofocus and a 5 MP front camera with f/1.7. Powered by a 3000mAh non-removable battery, it sports a fingerprint scanner and features Always-On display.

Those who are in the US would most likely receive the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 variant. However, some reports claim that some carriers could also carry the Exynos version. As for those who are in Europe and Asia, it is most likely that the Exynos would be the default model. However, only the UK has been confirmed to get the 8890 version so there is still a chance for the other markets to receive other variant.
