Captain Marvel: Katheryn Winnick, Brie Larson linked for title role; Marvel not going for Carol Danvers version?

By

Captain Marvel's appearance in her MCU solo movie is not due to happen until early 2019 which is why it's understandable that casting news are scarce. However, speculations on possible actresses who could play as Carol Danvers have started around the web.

Since the announcement of the film, several actresses have been linked to the character of Captain Marvel. According to Youth Health Magazine, some of the names rumored to take the role are Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Rebecca Ferguson, and Katee Sackhoff.

More recently, Katheryn Winnick was also rumored to be climbing higher on the list with her success in several movies like Killers and Cloud 9, as well as her performance in the Vikings television series. Academy Award winner Brie Larson was also linked to the project.

As reported by Cinemablend, Larson's performance in 21st Jump Street and Room proves her ability in acting for comedic and dramatic film genres which are also embodied in Marvel's films. However one factor that could get in Larson's way would be the fact that she's younger than Carole Danvers who was portrayed in the comics as colonel of the US Air Force.

Danvers was established as a high ranking official in the military, and so an actress in her 30s could more justifiably play the role. Meanwhile according to Science Fiction, Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki is also rumored to be on the running for the Captain Marvel role.

Debicki's attachment to the heroine role began when Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed her casting without revealing her character in the movie's sequel. Gunn clarified that Carol Danvers will not be joining the Guardians, which sparked rumors that instead of Colonel Danvers, MCU might opt for Phyla-Vell, or Moondragon version of the character.

Casting rumors are plenty for Captain Marvel. However, until Marvel release their official cast line up, these rumors are best treated with a grain of salt. Captain Marvel's solo outing is set to be written by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman. It is slated for a March 08, 2019 release.
