‘Deadpool 2’ gets greenlight with script currently penned; Director Tim Miller, Ryan Reynolds expected to return

'Deadpool 2' is an upcoming film intended as the follow up to Tim Miller's science-fiction and adventure fil of the same name. 20th Century Fox recently greenlit the project and is intent on keeping the original creative team together. The sequel's script is also currently being written.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to the much-awaited anti-hero film of the same name is already in the works even before the first film premieres on February 12 this year. 20th Century Fox has already greenlit the project, with its script currently written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The sequel does not come as a surprise since the first 'Deadpool' film is expected to earn at least $65 million during its opening weekend run, with some generous estimates going as high as $70 million.

The studio is reportedly intent on keeping the original creative team together, specifically with bringing back director Tim Miller, writers Reese and Wernick as well as leading man Ryan Reynolds. According to IGN, Miller is currently not attached to the work on the sequel. Meanwhile, Reynolds admitted that he would want to remain as Deadpool for "the rest of his life" and "never want to play another comic book character again".

The 39-year old Canadian actor is not a stranger to adapting comic book heroes in the big screen. He portrayed Hal Jordan in the DC Comics live-action adaptation of the 'Green Lantern' as well as the subsequent video game adaptation 'Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters'. Reynolds admitted that he did not enjoy his previous stint as the DC superhero.

Reynolds is set to portray the titular character Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool, an assassin with an infatuation with death known for his accelerated healing factor, diminished mental state, as well as profane sense of humor. He is nicknamed "the Merc with a Mouth" as he is constantly talking and making jokes leading him to be irritating to be around.

According to i09.com, Reynolds hinted at future follow-ups in a previous interview. He said, "In the future I think, if we're doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we're going to really explore the X-Men a lot, and maybe X-Force... X-Force is really my priority. I really want to get that in." 'Deadpool' is one of the films in Marvel's shared cinematic universe that spans films such as 'Gambit', 'Wolverine' and the other 'X-Men' movies.

'Deadpool 2' is an upcoming action-adventure and science-fiction film intended as the follow-up to the 2016 release of the same name. The first film is directed by Tim Miller based on a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It stars Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Miller, Stefan Kapicic and Rachel Sheen.
