The man who was reported by his former girlfriend on "looking to kill a cop" was charged with the murder of an Ohio officer on Monday. The officer was shot dead by the man and could be sentenced to death penalty if convicted to the charge.
According to CBS News, Herschel Ray Jones was charge by the Knox County Grand jury on 10 counts, which half of it, related to the murder of an officer in Danville named, Thomas Cottrell, 34 years old. Corttrell's body was discovered behind the said village's municipal building in January. The body was recovered shortly after Jones' former girlfriend warned the authorities that he yields a firearm and is looking for another officer to target. Prosecutor Chip McConville said Jones will be represented by a public attorney.
Aside from the charge of murder, Jones has numerous records of convictions, according to Fox News. His crimes were dated back in the year 2001, including breaking and entering, burglary, receiving stolen property and carrying a concealed weapon. Jail records in Ohio also shows Jones served almost four years in prison due to conviction of receiving stolen property as well as manufacturing of illegal drugs. In April, he was released from prison.
Jones was reported by her former girlfriend, who called 911 regarding his killing plan, the dispatch call said. Al.com also reported, authorities received the call at approximately 11:20 p.m. from the woman saying police officers in Danville were in danger, and her former boyfriend, Jones, had weapon and was looking for a cop to slay.
The woman told the authorities that Jones threatened to kill her. Dispatchers tried to call Corttrell after the woman called however, they were not able to contact him. Authorities started to look for him and discovered his body. Jones was spotted and was arrested after a short foot chase. A date for Jones' first appearance on the new charges will be set by the court, McConville said.
