Is a second Top Gun movie in the works? Looks like every fans' dream is just about to come true as word is that Tom Cruise's Maverick is in the talks to return to the big screen. Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased about the project in a tweet on Tuesday, in which he posted a photo of him with Tom Cruise and the caption: "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2."
Huffington Post reported that the sequel to the 1986 Top Gun movie is already 30 years in the making. Bruckheimer even teased that they're "getting closer and closer" to bring the project back to life.
Serious talk about a Top Gun 2 movie came to the surface in 2010. Tom Cruise, Bruckheimer and the late Tony Scott all pitched in to develop the story and character line-up for the film. The project, however, made a sudden stop in 2012 when Top Gun director Tony Scott shockingly committed suicide in Los Angeles.
The film prospect was resurrected in 2014 when Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that he and Cruise were "back at it."
"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer hinted about the possible storyline for the Top Gun 2 movie. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture."
Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison sang to the same tune as Bruckheimer and revealed that the move will incorporate the rise of drone technology and how "the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots" has come.
For now, it's still uncertain whether the rest of the Top Gun movie cast will reprise their role for the second installment. The Inquisitr noted that Val Kilmer is onboard the project and will be reviving his role as Iceman. There's still no confirmation as to whether Meg Ryan, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and other cast members will reunite with Cruise and Kilmer.
The Top Gun 2 movie release has not yet been confirmed. According to Deadline, Cruise is currently in Louisiana filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
When Top Gun was first released in 1986, it grossed $365.8 million worldwide. It also transformed Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer into big Hollywood stars and stabilized their careers in the industry.
