'The Mummy' is an upcoming reboot of the original films of the same name. Tom Cruise has been confirmed as the film's new lead protagonist. The film, set to be released in June 2017, will be filmed in Malta.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Cruise is set to play the lead role in Universal's newest reboot of the monster-adventure franchise centered on an ancient Egyptian mummy. The original film series starred iconic actors such as Boris Karloff, Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The first film was released in 1932 and spawned five sequels that ran until 1955.

Since Cruise signed on for the planned reboot directed by Alex Kurtzman based on a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Universal Pictures scheduled the release date for June 9, 2017. It was also reported that Sofia Boutella of 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' fame is set to star as the titular mummy as a female reimagining of the popular monster, although this news was still unconfirmed.

Another article by Business Standard stated that the studio previously hinted at creating a shared monster movie universe interconnecting classic horror icons such as Dracula, Van Helsing, Frankenstein and even the Bride of Frankenstein. The film was originally slated for a March 24, 2017 release but has been moved to June to accommodate Cruise's schedule.

The 53-year old Hollywood A-lister is currently attached to other films such as Edward Zwick's 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' scheduled to be released on October 21, 2016 and Doug Liman's upcoming thriller 'Mena' set to premiere on January 6, 2017. He is well-known for his work on numerous action-thriller blockbuster hits throughout his career including the 'Mission Impossible' series, 'Valkyrie', 'Top Gun', 'Minority Report', 'The Last Samurai' and 'War of the Worlds'.

According to KFTV, local newspaper Times of Malta reported that 'The Mummy' reboot will be filmed in Malta, specifically in the small village Kalkara. The film's production team has already begun scouting around for possible locations around the island and have chosen Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara as one of its spots. The location is said to double for Iraq where the film will be set.

'The Mummy' is an upcoming reboot of the original series of films that began in 1932. It will star Tom Cruise in the lead role and will be released in June 2017. The film's plot is said to follow a navy SEAL on a mission to Iraq where he finds a group of "terrorists" hiding in a bunker, which is an actual ancient grave.
