Sony Xperia M5 Gets Android 5.1 Lollipop Update: Will Marshmallow Come by March 2016?

By

Sony officially released the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual phones. Amid the reported Marshmallow release to these devices this quarter, Android 6.0 seemed to be in dim light within the February - March timeframe.

Sony Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual phones are have just received the Android 5.1 Lollipop version. The update comes to Xperia M5 units with model number E5603, E5653 and E5606, and to Xperia M5 Dual units with model number E5633, E5663 and E5643. More units are expected getting the update too.

Android 5.1 Lollipop brings build number 30.1.A.1.33 to Xperia M5 and 30.1.B.1.33 to the dual versions of the phone. It is 596.4 MB. The first maintenance release of Google for Android Lollipop brings improved memory management, enhancements to volume and silent mode control, more control on alerts, and the ability to capture photos from the camera using Sony SmartWatch 3. Download and installation is now available in Thailand, Nordic region, Middle East, Africa and India.

While many expected that Marshmallow is coming to the device this quarter, it seemed vague now to be released to these phones since Sony follow the three-month cycle of software updates. In fact, in most of its cases, major software updates come at longer timeframe. However, phone owners should remain optimistic about Sony's mantra to release updates as quick as it can to as many devices qualified.

Sony Xperia M5 has been included in the Japanese giant's Marshmallow priority list alongside a few other devices.

When Marshmallow comes, it is expected to receive convenient notification panel, native fingerprint support, extensive Android Pay, granular app permissions, app links, simplified volume slide, floating window for text selection, custom Chrome tabs, system user interface tuner, RAM memory manager, USB Type-C and USB 3.1 support, screenshots options, microSD support, aps and settings backup, Google settings and Direct share.
