Solo 'Wasp' Movie: Ant-Man's lady love set to star in own superhero movie? Director says answer lies with the fans

By

If anything, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) needs a female-led superhero movie to level up the testosterone-heavy silver screen battle. So far, Captain Marvel is the only heroine confirmed in the roster, with a 2019 movie in the works. But news has it that Ant-Man's fierce partner The Wasp might get her own spotlight soon.

Last year's "Ant-Man" release introduced fans to Hope Van Dyne, also known as The Wasp. She's smart, witty and she kicks butt, and the fact that Evangeline Lilly plays the character makes her all the more endearing.

Not long after the Ant-Man release, the studio announced that Ant-Man update including follow-up temporarily titled "Ant-Man and The Wasp" will hit theatres on Jul. 6, 2018, with Paul Rudd and Lilly reprising their roles, Games Radar noted.

However, a Wasp standalone movie might not be such a far-fetched idea either. Adam McKay, who co-wrote the story for "Ant-Man" with Paul Rudd, dished out on the possibility of a solo "Wasp" movie.

Certainly there's a lot of female superheroes in the Marvel universe so I'm sure you're going to see them start to spread out. They sort of started with their kind of bedrock characters from the 60s and the 70s and I think you saw more of an explosion of female characters happening in the 80s and then the 90s," McKay said, "X-Men obviously has great female characters, but that'd be interesting, a Wasp movie. I don't know, that'd be very interesting."

According to Movie Web the director also added that the certainty of a "Wasp" spin-off would depend on how "Ant-Man 2" will perform.

It's still not sure, however, if Adam McKay will return for the production of "Ant-Man 2," but he hopes to continue making contributions to the script with the other screenwriters. He's currently busy with promotional activities for the Oscar nominated movie "The Big Short" which he directed.

The MCU is heading into Phase 3, so the line-up is pretty much fixed at this point. While the Wasp could appear in other Marvel movies, particularly since she's a predominant player in the Avengers comics, the possibility of a solo movie is there, but perhaps not soon, Cinema Blend wrote.

Adam McKay added to the Ant-Man update that many of the Wasp's adventures and action scenes are worked with a team or a partner, so it would be interesting to know how Marvel would develop a movie with her in the center.

Meanwhile, Paul Rudd will return to the big screen as Ant-Man in this year's "Captain America: Civil War", after which he will begin filming with Evangeline Lilly for "Ant-Man and The Wasp".
