‘Silent Hills P.T.’ resurrected? Psychological horror ‘Layers of Fear’ coming next month

By

Development studio Bloober Team has announced that it is ready to release the full version of the horror game "Layers of Fear" for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC systems in February. Currently, the playable demo version of the game is available through Steam's Early Access program and Microsoft's Xbox Game Preview.

In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Bloober Team's Rafal Basaj noted that the game delivers a different type of horror story. Instead of running away from ghosts, monsters and other creatures like in other similarly-themed titles, "Layers of Fear" relies more on the subtleness of its horror. In a way, the game plays with the gamers' paranoia.

According to Basaj, the game is set inside a mansion and players take on the role of a painter dealing with his own mental issues. But, during the course of the game, as the character's own psyche deteriorates, his physical environment also changes.

Some of these are shown through the disturbing transformations of the paintings' images, the disappearance of doors in the hallways, and the changing sizes of the rooms. Many of these happen almost immediately after the character turns his back on a room or starts walking down the hallway.

As shown in the game's announcement trailer, "Layers of Fear" has a very cinematic look to it. Also, the way its environment changes is very reminiscent to the peeling walls of another horror game, "Silent Hill," and the playable teaser for the now-cancelled "Silent Hills" title from film director, Guillermo del Toro, and "Metal Gear" creator, Hideo Kojima.

Basaj noted that as players progress in the game, they will come across the character's various personal items such as letters and photos. Through these, they will be able to uncover the truth about the character's personality and the overall story of the game.

According to Eurogamer, the full version of "Layers of Fear" will come out on February 16 for three gaming systems mentioned above. The game's demo version, on the other hand, is currently available through Steam and the Xbox Store for $12.99.
