“American Pie” singer, Don McLean, and his wife have agreed to dismiss a protection order issued against McLean following his domestic disturbance arrest last week.
McLean, 70, was earlier charged with misdemeanor domestic violence Jan. 18 after his wife, photographer, Patrisha McLean, called 911 during a physical dispute at their Camden, Maine residence.
When police investigated the call, Mrs. McLean had reportedly said she feared for her life and safety, NBC News said, pointing out the incident as just one in a series of domestic violence charges involving the couple that goes back decades, documenting a pattern of abuse.
According lawyer, Walter McKee, the McLean couple have decided to “move forward” and file for the dismissal of the order of protection case that Mrs. McLean had requested following her husband’s arrest, Yahoo reported.
In a statement issued by Mrs. McLean, she said she "did not intend to define Don or our relationship" with her earlier request for the protection order. She also pleaded with McLean’s fans not to put too much focus on his impending court case, ABC News said.
According to Mrs. McLean, who has been married to the singer for over three decades, her husband has “a big heart,” and called the recently transpired domestic abuse incident an “unfortunate” event in their marriage.
While neither party is seeking a divorce, McLean still has to face the court for his criminal case, for which he pleaded not guilty.
McLean, whose 1971 single “American Pie” from the album of the same name, topped the Billboard music charts when it was released. The song’s original manuscript sold for $1.2 million during a Christie’s auction last year.
The song was inspired by the tragic deaths of music legends, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper, who died when their plane crashed on Feb. 3, 1959.
