It is the huntsman versus the evil queen once more with the upcoming prequel/sequel of Snow White and The Huntsman officially titled as The Huntsman: Winter's War. The evil Queen Ravenna will be joined by her equally evil sister who is set to reveal more about the huntsman's past.
The first film in the franchise was a box office success after it took home $386 million from its $170 million budget. Although the decision to make a sequel was not a surprise, the exclusion of the first film's former lead actress, Kristen Stewart, who played Snow White was.
But according to Screen Rant, the plot synopsis for The Huntsman: Winter's War promises a new focus in the storyline as it will explore the past of the Eric, the huntsman, and his connection with Queen Ravenna as well as Ravenna's sister, The Ice Queen Freya.
"Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White's blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya's ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen-including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)-only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.", the synopsis reads.
Upon hearing about her sister's death, Freya summoned her warriors to get the Magic Mirror. However, upon knowing that her sister can be resurrected from the dead, the sisters threaten the land with much darker powers that it has ever seen.
As reported by Release Date Portal, the sequel will see the return of Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron as Eric and Ravenna, respectively. They will be joined by Emily Blunt who will play as Freya, and Jessica Chastain who will play the role of Sara.
It will be directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan,who served as the visual effects supervisor in the first film so the visual effects for the sequel is expected to be grander, as reported by Movie Pilot. The film will also serve as Troyan's film debut.
A trailer was also released for the film which evokes a darker take on the classic fairy tale. The Huntsman: Winter's War Facebook page has also revealed photos of the major characters in their costumes. It is expected to debut in theaters in April 22, 2016.
