Chad Curtis given 45 days to decide on re-sentencing for criminal sexual conduct

The former Major League Baseball player, Chad Curtis, was given 45 days by Judge Amy McDowell to decide on whether to get re-sentencing for his case of criminal sexual conduct. Curtis said that he will talk to a lawyer and a prosecutor for his chances in the process.

As reported by USA Today, Curtis' case was sent back by the Michigan Supreme Court to the Barry County Judge after a decision was made last year that affected sentencing procedures across the state. Curtis can now file for re-sentencing after he was sentenced in 2013.

According to Detroit News, Curtis was charged after he sexually assaulted student-athletes at Lakewood High School in 2011 and 2012. Four young female students claimed that they were inappropriately touched by Curtis.

In order to be eligible for parole, Curtis must serve at least 7 years in prison. M Live reports that Judge McDowell told Curtis that he can talk about the issue with a lawyer. However, Curtis stated that he will no longer get the services of Jeffery Crampton as he now lacks fund to pay the lawyer.

Futhermore, Curtis said that he has been researching about the issue in his prison and found out through a family friend that attorney Jesse Nash is willing to represent him pro bono. He also said that he believed his sentence could be reduced to 25 months if he goes for re-sentencing. But it is still possible for him to get the same sentence or a longer sentence.

Curtis also offered to meet with a prosecutor to weigh the options for the procedure. "We can probably determine between the two of us if it's even worth pursuing", he said. "I'm not trying to do something that's pointless."

Curtis was a major league baseball player for 10 years of his career. He previously played for Detroit TIgers, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and Texas Rangers.
