Playstation VR Price, Release Update: Cheaper than the oculus rift, does not break the bank

By

Sony announced its new Virtual Reality product could come out June 30 and may not break the bank as it comes out cheaper than the Oculus Rift.

According to Stuff, multiple Swiss websites have a listing for the Playstation VR priced around US$500. The Oculus Rift, which is ready for pre-order, is noted to be priced at US$ 600 plus shipping.

Another added savings can be earned when you buy a PS4 on top of the Playstation VR as opposed to buying a high-end PC needed to power the Oculus Rift.

Sony, however, is keeping mum about any features that will be included in the Playstation VR. Recent leaks did manage to show off the control unit that is used to connect to the PS4, but there is no official confirmation from the company.

However, Gadgets 360 was able to get a clue from Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Andrew House during last year's Tokyo Game Show. The Sony CEO was quoted as saying that the VR device could cost as much as a PS4, but did not reveal the exact price. Considering that a PS4 retails for around US$ 400, it falls close to the leaked price of US$500.

The device was also briefly listed on Amazon Canada with a price of about US$700, but Sony quickly made a statement saying the post was erroneous and it was Amazon's fault as they have yet to officially announce the price.

Express UK reports that since the Rift was already pre-selling last month, Sony will not wait long in announcing a release date for the Playstation VR. There have been some rumors that the release will be on June 30, but even this has not been confirmed by Sony.

Playstation Lifestyle was able to speak with Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Atsushi Morita and he said that the next twelve months could be a defining moment for Playstation VR.

Morita also disclosed that Sony will be rolling out testing booths for the system across stores and through a handful of events in Asia. This is intended to give would-be buyers firm impressions of the device's potential before deciding to buy.

The Sony president affirmed that the VR will be an integral part of the Playstation ecosystem for years to come and is not a flash on the pan.
