Judge Rips Allen Iverson: Former NBA MVP In a Heap of Legal Trouble With Divorce Proceedings

By

An Atlanta family court judge presiding over Allen Iverson's divorce proceedings ripped the former NBA MVP as an unfit parent with a drinking problem. The judge, who was not named, blasted Iverson, who was married for 11 years to a woman to whom he had five children.

"[Iverson] does not know how to manage the children; has little interest in learning to manage the children and has actually, at times, been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development," the judge blasted the ex-NBA great. "For example, he has refused to attend to an obvious and serious alcohol problem, which has caused him to do inappropriate things in the presence of the children while impaired. He has left the children alone without supervision. He has left his young daughters in a hotel room with men who are unknown to the mother."

According to the report, the judge also ordered Iverson to see a psychiatrist, and to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year. It was also reported that the judge award Tawanna, his ex-wife, custody of their children. Allen could only visit them under certain conditions.

The 37-year-old, spent 14 seasons in the NBA, and was a winner of both the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year honors. He is an 11-time all-star, and 4-time scoring champion. His last NBA game was nearly two years ago with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was given an offer by an affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks last week to sign him with the Texas Legends Development League team. He turned down the offer, though thanked management via his Twitter account.

"I thank Donnie [Walsh, the Mavericks president of basketball operations], for the consideration and while I think the D-League is a great opportunity, it is not the route for me," Iverson wrote on Twitter. In a separate tweet, he also wrote, "I realize my actions contributed to my early departure from the NBA, should God provide me another opportunity I will give it my all."
