‘Fifty Shades Darker’ begins filming this February in Vancouver; First adaptation could’ve been “more raunchy”, says acclaimed film editor

'Fifty Shades Darker' is an upcoming erotic-drama film intended as a sequel to 2015's 'Fifty Shades of Grey'. The second film in the series will begin filming in February in Vancouver. Anne Coates, multi-award winning film editor, thought that the first adaptation could've been "more raunchy".

According to Vancity Buzz, filming for the highly-anticipated sequel will begin in February. Director James Foley will start shooting back-to-back in Vancouver from February throughout July in time for the scheduled release dates of the next two films in the erotic drama cinematic trilogy. Foley has signed on to replace the first film's director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who exited the series due to creative differences with book author E.L. James.

Another article by Melty revealed that the sequel's production budget has been listed for $20 million. The first film, 'Fifty Shades of Grey', worked with a budget of $40 million and in turn earned a whopping $570 million in the box office despite mainly negative reviews.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are set to reprise their roles as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively. Max Martini, Eloise Mumford, Luke Grimes, Rita Ora and Victor Rasuk make up the rest of the cast so far. It will be produced by E.L. James, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti.

Meanwhile, British film editor Anne Coates had something to say about the first film. The critically-acclaimed editor best known for her work on 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'Erin Brokovich' and 'Sweet November' also did work on 2015's 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

Coates said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she was surprised they approached her for the film at all. She said, "It was kind of fun... I was surprised to be asked to do it, but I think it was because I did [Adrian Lyne's 2002 erotic thriller starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane] Unfaithful, which was fairly sexy." She added, "I thought it could have been a little more raunchy myself. Creatively, it was quite interesting because they were trying to get as sexy as they could and get an R rating. So we were very delicately going around some of the scenes."

'Fifty Shades Darker' is an upcoming erotic drama film based on E.L. James' bestselling novels of the same name. It is directed by James Foley based on a screenplay by Niall Leonard. It is currently in pre-production and scheduled to be released on February 10, 2017.
