Germany Proposes A Change in Refugee Law By Putting A Limit On Migrants In the Country

By

The Lower House of Parliament in Germany questions the legality of introducing a limit on refugees entering the country. The cap, also called as "Obergrenze", is under debate among the concerned authorities and officials whether a change in policy should be adopted. This is due to the insufficient details of EU asylum and refugee laws regarding the numerical limit of the people seeking protection.

Reuters reported that German Chancellor, Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and their Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have been involved in the issue of putting a cap among refugees. According to the report, Merkel opposed the calls by some members of her party and said that it is impossible to limit refugees, especially with the presence of political persecution. In another argument, Horst Seehofer, leader of the CSU, has been promoting limits to be placed on migrant inflows. CSU governs the federal state of Bavaria, which is where many refugees head.

Further, related report mentioned that putting a cap among refugees heading to a specific country may depend on the Geneva Convention. This is by sending the refugees to third countries after being rejected. Though, the legal experts in Germany are uncertain with the justification of deporting and rejecting refugees once the country's cap is reached because of the inadequate details of EU asylum and refugee laws.

On the other hand, Fortune stated that there are 1 million Syrian migrants in Germany in 2015. The data has increased from the previous details of UNHCR, an exclusive page for UN Refugee Agency. According to the related report, the change of refugee law in the country would also change the model of refugee protection.

As of the moment, there are no final details regarding the change of refugee law in Germany. Meanwhile, Syrian migrants are still heading to its neighboring countries to seek for protection.
