Top Gun 2 Updates: Tom Cruise’s “Maverick” will fly up again; Film’s plot details released

Tom Cruise will be featured in Bruckheimer's Top Gun 2 as the dangerous pilot, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, decades after the original one premiered. Moreover, director and Skydance CEO revealed some details about the film's story line.

It's almost 30 years since the action drama film, Top Gun, premiered in 1986 which focused on the pilot academy life of Lt. Pete Mitchell, also known as "Maverick." Since then, many have been waiting on the news regarding the sequel and Tom Cruise sure did the job in giving them what they want. According to Reuters, the 53-year old actor expressed his desire to return to those high-speed air chases.

In an interview, the actor stated that the upcoming film will be fun. And he's hoping for there will be less CGI and rather a hands-on experience with the aircrafts during the development. Cruise's statements will surely increase the hopes of the people waiting for the sequel since locking up the main character's engagement confirms the development.

Furthermore, elements of the anticipated film's plot were discussed by the Skydance CEO, David Ellison. As reported by Collide, Ellison verified that a story is on the move to authenticate the film's possibility. As stated by David Ellison, "Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today." Also, Ellison added that the movie will be in 3D and IMAX.

Reflecting about Ellison's statements, producer Jerry Buckheimer must be acknowledged as he revealed the plot's film would be focused on the drone technology and lessening use for fighter pilots. According to Franchise Herald, Buckheimer expressed that they're looking at the modern angle now, drones. He added that the film will be about the difference between a fighter pilot and a drone. Further saying that pilots are obsolete due to drones but still, they're here to stay.

Top Gun 2 is the upcoming sequel to 1986's Top Gun starred by then, 24-year old Tom Cruise. The latter film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2015. Skydance CEO and producer specified some details about the film's progress but still made their lips zipped on the possible release dates and complete cast.
