New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney said that he was introducing a bill that would forbid replacement referees from calling any professional sports event in the state of Jersey.
Sweeney announcement comes a day after Monday night's game in which the Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks as a result of a disputed call by a replacement referee. The Packers lost the game in a the last minute with a score of 14-12.
"Enough is enough...To me, it's like fraud... It is not the product that people are paying for. Maybe people should start to demand refunds on their tickets," Sweeney told reporters at Yahoo News.
The cause for this ban according to Sweeney is player safety. "We wouldn't allow a factory or construction site to operate without fully trained supervisors on hand to ensure the safety of employees. Why should we do anything differently when the job site is a playing field?," said the 53-year-old to Yahoo News.
The NFL referees are not in the game this season due an ongoing labor dispute with the league. It has three weeks since the lock out.
New Jersey is home to two NFL teams, namely the Jets and Giants.
It is still unclear whether this bill will pass and become a law. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is yet to comment on Sweeney's proposal.
