A Mississippi church deacon is being hailed as a hero after being shot after a church-sponsored Easter Egg hunt.
The shooting occurred shortly after the Saturday event and involved a domestic dispute. Deacon Eddie Shed, 39, died trying to protect the female victim of the domestic altercation, the Sun Herald reported.
"Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm. He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss," said Dr. Gregg S. Magee, Sr., Senior Pastor of Empowerment Ministries Christian Center.
"What began as a beautiful day filled with laughter and joy was overshadowed by a criminal act, and we are all heartbroken by this senseless violence," Magee said.
Tyran Deion Gable, 24, faces several charges, including first-degree murder. A parishioner was also injured in the incident, the Sun Herald reported.
The incident began as a dispute involving child custody. During the argument, Gable pulled again, WLOX-13 reported. He opened fire and hit Shed and the parishioner, both of whom were described as trying to de-escalate the situation. The station reported that Gable is being held without bond.
"Deacon Shed was a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope. His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him," Magee said.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Shed's family.
"Your contributions will help ease the financial burden during this difficult period, allowing the family to focus on healing and honoring his legacy. Please consider donating and sharing the campaign to show your love and support," the page states.
