Roughly 600 pounds of marijuana were stolen from a Colorado State Patrol evidence facility earlier this month in a bizarre late night heist that's now the subject of multiple investigations.
The marijuana was originally seized during a highway drug interdiction operation by the Colorado State Patrol and stored in a secured trailer in an Arapahoe County evidence lot, according to Westword.
The cannabis, which was scheduled for destruction, was being held temporarily as part of ongoing enforcement proceedings.
On April 4, during a routine property walkthrough, a CSP evidence technician discovered a damaged gate at the facility's entrance. Further inspection revealed that a secured trailer inside had also been broken into.
Investigators believe the heist took place the night of April 1, when suspects used power tools to cut through both the outer gate and the trailer lock, making off with approximately 600 pounds of marijuana. Authorities only discovered the theft nearly three days after it happened.
The Colorado State Patrol has launched an internal investigation into the breach and acknowledged "gaps" in the facility's security systems.
