The Hawaii anesthesiologist, who police say tried to kill his wife while on a hiking trail, had been sexually abusing her prior to the attack, according to a published report.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, faces attempted murder charges after police say he attacked Arielle Konig, 36 while hiking the Pali Puka Trail in Oahu. The Daily Mail reported that in an application for a restraining order, Arielle alleged that Gerhardt had "sexually abused and assaulted me over the last few months."
The newspaper noted that the court filing did not specify what Gerhardt did or when.
After attacking his wife, Gerhardt allegedly Facetimed an adult son from a previous marriage and told him, "I just tried to kill Ari, but she got away," the Daily Mail reported the application states.
The application also provided details about the attack and the state of the couple's marriage preceding the hike. Arielle described Gerhardt as consumed by "extreme jealousy," according to the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, and that he had attempted to monitor and control her communications.
The couple had gone to Oahu on a short vacation alone, having someone else watch the kids for the weekend. Gerhardt suggested that the couple hike the trail, which is known for picturesque views but also known for narrow trails and steep drop-offs.
When Gerhardt suggested they take a selfie near a cliff, Arielle demured. In the application, she says he flew into a rage, according to Hawaii News Now. "When I got close to Gerhardt, Gerhardt grabbed me by my upper arms and started pushing me back towards the cliff edge," she said in the document. "At first, I thought he was joking, but I quickly realized he was seriously trying to make me fall off the cliff."
Failing to throw her from the cliff, Gerhardt attempted to inject her with a syringe, which she fought off. He then grabbed a rock and began hitting her in the head, Hawaii News Now reported the court filing states.
