A Minnesota man asked authorities to kill him after he reportedly murdered his roommate during a drug-induced psychosis.

Cody Kolstad, 35, pleaded guilty to the 2022 murder of his roommate, 41-year-old Brian Daniel Stoeckel, on Friday. Kolstad called 911 after killing Stoeckel by shooting him in the neck with a shotgun while Stoeckel slept.

Kolstad, who had been under the influence of drugs at the time, believed that someone told him that between him and Stoeckel, one of them "needed to die by midnight."

"I shot him in the head, dude," he told a responding deputy. "It's in the head. I'm going to jail/prison."

After officers read him his Miranda rights, Kolstad proceeded to ask officials to "put one in my head and burn me in that building. I fell asleep that's the cover story. It's all f—ing lies."

Authorities asked Kolstad why he wanted to die, and he responded by saying "because I took a life." He also admitted to having taken "lots of drugs."

He proceeded to tell authorities that "another person had told him either he or Brian needed to die by midnight," upon which he retrieved the shotgun and shot at Stoeckel twice, though one shot hit the wall.

Kolstad has been charged with first-degree murder but is facing 25 years in prison as part of his plea to second-degree murder.

"Brian Daniel Stoeckel, age 41, of Morristown died unexpectedly in his home on May 31, 2022," reads Stoeckel's obituary. "He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his stories and interesting sense of humor. He truly brought the life to the party."

"No matter the circumstance, you'd always leave with a story of something funny or crazy Brian did or said when you were with him," the obituary said.
