Police in Florida believe they are getting closer to solving the cold case murder mystery of a retired couple.
David and Mina Swan were found dead in their Clearwater home in September 2018 when neighbors became concerned by the newspapers that were piling up in front of their home, Fox 13 reported.
Inside, police found the couple shot to death. Authorities believe the killer entered through the front door and there was no signs of forced entry, the station reported. David was 88, and Mina was 80.
The nature of the crime seemed to only deepen the mystery. Clearwater Police Deputy Chief Mike Walek told Fox 13 the crime was a "precision act."
"Without going into details, this was horrific," Walek told the station.
Now, years later, police say they have new leads and are specifically focusing on Shreveport, Louisiana. "We have over 200 people associated with this case and more than 550 pieces of evidence," Walek told Fox 13. "It's a lot to process, but we're going to figure out who did this."
According to the Shreveport Times, David and Mina each had children from prior marriages, and David still had ties to Shreveport.
Walek specifically addressed residents in Shreveport to assist in the investigation, telling the newspaper that "this wasn't just a random act... these people knew where they were going. They knew what they were doing and what they were going to do."
Investigators told the newspaper that digital footprints have led them to believe that people in and around Shreveport-Bossier have knowledge about the case. A reward for information in the case has been raised to $53,000.
Fox 13 reported that since the couple was murdered, lawsuits have been filed between surviving members of the blended family, which led to depositions. "Is money a motivation, or is money a reason behind this? I can't tell you that," Walek told Fox 13.
