A 25-year-old Michigan man is in stable condition and a co-worker is in handcuffs after a shooting in a parking garage of a hospital, but a motive for the attack remains unclear.
At a press briefing, Lt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department, said that the shooter and victim knew each other and were both employees at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, mlive.com reported.
"This appears to be a targeted incident between two employees of the hospital," Hancock said during the briefing, according to mlive.com.
The incident placed the hospital on lockdown Thursday morning and sparked fears of a mass shooting. The suspect, who Hancock did not name, fled the scene, prompting authorities to issue warnings to the surrounding community while the person was at-large.
The suspect was in custody by about 9:44 a.m. EST, mlive.com reported.
Five shots were fired in the incident, but Hancock did not share what led up to the shooting or what the motive might have been. He also did not name the suspect or victim, but said the victim was able to identify who shot him, mlive.com reported.
Police arrested the suspect at a home in Troy. Neighbors told Local-4 that a large police presence descended on their neighborhood. One neighbor said the police set up a perimeter, deployed drones to gather intel and then sent in a SWAT team.
"It's just terrifying, how or when is it going to stop. It just feels like nothing is safe anymore," a neighbor said to Local-4.
