Two men are now facing charges over a year after three Kansas City Chiefs fans were found frozen in the backyard of a home.
Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson each face three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, the Associated Press reported.
The case dates back to January 9, 2024, when 38-year-old Ricky Johnson, 36-year-old Clayton McGeeney, and 37-year-old David Harrington were found dead in Willis' backyard in Kansas City.
The men had gathered at Willis home to watch the Chiefs game on Jan. 7 and he had thought they had left, according to Willis. They weren't found until McGeeney's wife went looking for him, the AP reported.
"KCPD detectives never stopped working on the case, waiting for all the facts to come in. Reaching this point is a testament to their dedication to delivering justice for the victims and their loved ones," police said in a statement.
In a press conference announcing the charges, Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd said that the three men died of combined fentanyl and cocaine toxicity. He recounted how, during a search of Willis' home after the bodies were found, bags containing fentanyl and cocaine were found. Zahnd said DNA on the bags tied them to Carson and Willis.
Zahnd said that Carson and Willis face manslaughter charges for providing the drugs and "recklessly causing the deaths" of the men. Zahnd confirmed Carson is now in jail, held on $100,000 bond and that Willis was expected to surrender to authorities.
"This case is a tragic reminder of the dangers of street drugs, but make no mistake, the people who supply those drugs can and will be held accountable when people overdose," Zahnd said.
