An Oregon man received 10 years for fatally slashing his broth in the throat after a dispute over a Japanese samurai sword.

William Lawrence, 43, killed his brother, 44-year-old Gus Lawrence in April 2024, orgeonlive.com reported. The incident happened after Gus had purposely used his feet to bend the sword in an effort to break it.

A fight ensued, the police were called, and the brothers were told to calm down and cool off, the news outlet reported.

Police suggested that William sleep downstairs, away from his brother. However, shortly after police left around 2 a.m. William ran upstairs and slashed his brother's throat. At the time, Gus was in bed, his bloody feet wrapped from the attempted sword break, oregonlive.com reported.

After slashing his brother in the neck, William called 911.

"I just killed my brother, oh my god, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," he said according to oregonlive.com. Police said that Gus died of a cut to his jugular vein.

The two men lived with their mother at the time of the incident.

William Lawrence pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter in a deal with prosecutors, the website reported.
