A Massachusetts cab driver unknowingly became the getaway driver for a bank robbery in Somerville, leaving him shocked and shaken when police surrounded his car with the suspect inside.

The incident unfolded on January 22 when cab driver Dennis Ferrante picked up an unidentified man in Porter Square, People reported. The passenger requested a quick stop at East Cambridge Savings Bank on Highland Avenue.

Ferrante, unaware of the man's intentions, waited outside as the suspect entered the bank, demanded money and returned to the cab.

"I had no idea," Ferrante said. "I never saw him before. If I knew, I would've been petrified."

Witnesses, including bank customer John Politis, reported the suspect calmly demanded money from the teller before exiting with a backpack full of stolen cash.

Shortly after, police intercepted Ferrante's cab, recovering the stolen money and arresting the suspect.

Ferrante, who said he had no prior knowledge of the robbery, described the man as distraught, repeatedly muttering about his wife's reaction to the crime.

"All he kept saying is, 'my wife is going to kill me,'" Ferrante said.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is set to face arraignment on January 30. Meanwhile, the investigation continues as authorities gather evidence and determine the full scope of the crime.
