A Pennsylvania woman pleaded guilty Thursday to falsely accusing an innocent man of attempted rape and kidnapping, leading to his wrongful imprisonment for over a month.
Anjela Borisova Urumova, 20, admitted to fabricating the entire story and intentionally targeting the man because she thought he was "creepy," prosecutors said.
Urumova pleaded guilty to seven charges, including false reports, tampering with evidence, and making false statements to authorities.
On April 16, Urumova claimed that 41-year-old Daniel Pierson attacked her in a supermarket parking lot. Urumova told police that Pierson pulled her pants down and hit her in the face. She even had a visible cut on her lip to support her claims.
However, an investigation by Middletown Township Police and the Bucks County District Attorney's Office uncovered multiple inconsistencies in Urumova's story. Surveillance footage and a forensic review of her cellphone data contradicted her claims. When confronted with the evidence, Urumova confessed to fabricating the entire incident.
Her lip injury was found to have been caused by her grandmother, who allegedly suffers from dementia and struck her with a plastic object when startled. Urumova subsequently stated she targeted Pierson because she had seen him and his vehicle in the area repeatedly and thought he seemed "creepy."
Due to Urumova's false allegations, Pierson was wrongfully arrested, charged with multiple felonies, and spent 31 days in jail before the truth came to light. The charges against him were dropped, and he was released.
While it is difficult to accurately determine what percentage of sexual assault reports are false, estimates generally fall between 2-8%, making Urumova's baseless claim an anomaly.
Her sentencing trial is pending ongoing investigation.
