Skeletal remains found in a Florida canal last August have been confirmed as those of Doris Wurst, 35, and her 3-year-old daughter, Caren Doris Wurst, who vanished nearly 50 years ago.
The pair were last seen on November 7, 1974, at their home in the now-defunct Sunshine City Trailer Park in Plantation.
This breakthrough comes after a 14-month collaborative search involving Sunshine State Sonar, the Plantation Police Department, and the Broward Sheriff's Office, according to WSVN.
On August 10, 2024, a sonar scan by the volunteer team uncovered a 1961 Chevrolet Impala submerged in a canal near the 10100 block of West Broward Boulevard in Plantation.
Broward Sheriff's Office divers recovered the skeletal remains of an adult and a child from the vehicle.
For decades, the disappearance of Doris and Caren Wurst remained a cold case. Investigators suspect a car accident led the vehicle into the canal.
The identity of the remains was confirmed through DNA testing, a step forward in piecing together what happened to Doris and Caren.
"It was a privilege to be a part of this team effort and contribute to the outcome of this case. We are steadfast in our compassion and support for those whose lives have been forever changed by these events," the Sunshine State Sonar team said in a Facebook post.
