A North Carolina son's brave actions ended a deadly rampage Friday and stopped the alleged shooter who killed his parents and one other.
The triple homicide unfolded in Pitt County. David Lever, the man accused of the murders, had an arsenal of firearms in his possession, according to police. Authorities discovered over 50 weapons inside Lever's home and additional guns and ammunition in his van.
Lever is charged with the murders of 80-year-old Anthony Gribble, 76-year-old Paula Gribble, and 64-year-old Enrique Reyes, all of whom were shot dead in their homes, per WITN.
"The investigation of these cases leads us to believe there would have been additional victims had a family member of the victims not intervened until our deputies were able to arrive," Sheriff Paula Dance said during a Monday press conference.
It all began around 1:20 p.m. when Reyes, one of the victims, was seen returning home after shopping, according to police. Lever was captured coming and going from his house before leaving in a van. By 1:41 p.m., Lever arrived at a gas station, where he fired shots as he left, prompting a citizen to contact police.
Moments later, he drove toward the Gribbles' home on Peace Ridge Court. By 2:17 p.m., Anthony and Paula Gribble were murdered, and their son managed to hold Lever at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
Deputies later discovered Enrique Reyes lying in the driveway of his home on Forest Acres Drive. He had been shot multiple times.
Authorities believe Reyes was the first victim before Lever targeted the Gribbles.
Investigators have not determined a connection between Lever and Reyes, though WITN reported Lever was the Gribbles' real estate agent back in 2014.
Lever allegedly cursed at the presiding judge during his Monday court appearance. The judge ordered Lever to remain in custody without bond, assigned him a capital defender, and scheduled his next court date for January 29th.
