Police in Michigan continue to search for a missing 30-year-old woman while her ex-boyfriend is in jail on charges related to the investigation.
Deandre Booker, 32, of Roseville, Michigan, was charged with lying to investigators in the case, reported WDIV-4. Ashley Elkins disappeared Jan. 2 and Booker was charged Jan. 8.
"We want to bring closure for this family. My heart breaks for them, but we're confident we can get there and we're not going to stop until we do get there," Chief Mitch Berlin of the Roseville Police Department told WXYZ-7.
Berlin told the station that police are awaiting DNA analysis on some items associated with the investigation. Police suspect that Elkins was murdered.
"This violent act was premeditated. We will seek to enhance the charges once we get there, to exactly that, premeditated," Berlin told WXYZ-7.
Events began to unfold on New Year's Eve when Booker booked an appointment with Elkins, a hairstylist who had a home salon. Elkins mother, Monika Elkins, told WDIV-4 that when Booker knocked on the door her daughter told everyone in the home to be quiet and did not answer.
On Jan. 2, Elkins disappeared after leaving her home in Warren, Michigan around 8:30 a.m. The woman's phone was turned off and then turned back on. The station reported that according to data the last known location of the phone was Booker's residence in Roseville.
On Jan. 7 police recovered Elkins' car a few miles from Booker's residence. It was missing its license place, WDIV-4 reported. The next day Booker was arrested.
"What they indicated was there was substantial evidence collected at the home of the ex-boyfriend and they also indicated that based upon that evidence that Ashley was murdered. They don't have her body at this time. They do have good leads where her body is. They also indicated that the boyfriend is in custody on related charges not for murder at this time. A warrant is being prepared, but he will be arraigned in the morning at Roseville District Court at 10 a.m.," family spokesperson Maurice Morton told the station.
