Four months after a deadly school shooting claimed the lives of four people, a 14-year-old student at a Georgia high school was arrested for bringing a gun to campus.

On September 4, 2024, Apalachee High School was the site of a mass shooting that killed two teachers and two students, leaving multiple others injured, CNN reported.

The alleged shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, was charged with 55 counts, including murder, while his father, Colin Gray, faced charges for enabling his son's access to firearms.

The tragedy led to an outcry for improved school security measures, with the community urging the Barrow County School District to implement stricter protocols.

On January 8, 2025, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office reported that a 14-year-old student was arrested at Apalachee High School after school resource officers discovered he was carrying a firearm.

The student, whose name has been withheld due to his age, was charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds, theft, and being a minor in possession of a firearm.

Authorities confirmed that the student did not threaten anyone and cooperated during the arrest. In response to the incident, the school district canceled classes and postponed events scheduled for January 9, including an open house.

The arrest has intensified demands from parents, teachers, and students for additional safety measures, such as implementing clear backpacks and AI-powered weapon detection systems.

On January 9, the Barrow County School District scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss these proposals and assess the findings of a recent security survey.

Superintendent Dallas LeDuff emphasized the district's commitment to making deliberate improvements to school safety.
