A Texas grandmother faces criminal charges after police said she medically abused her granddaughter in a Munchausen by Proxy case.
Lisa Campbell-Goins, 56, is charged with unlawful restraint, exploitation of a child, and injuring a child, according PEOPLE reported. She was arrested on New Year's Eve.
The magazine reported that the Tarrant County Sheriff's office considers the case an example of Munchausen by Proxy. Campbell-Goins also established a GoFundMe page to raise money based on the child's bogus illnesses.
Campbell-Goins is accused of abusing her 7-year-old granddaughter, who she had custody of because the girl's biological mother could not care for her, FOX-4 reported.
FOX-4 reported that the abuse involved the placement of an unnecessary gastric feeding tube. The girl was brought to doctors in August 2023 with ulcers in her GI tract, as well as damage to her colon and lower intestine.
Doctors added the tube to administer medicine and Campbell-Goins also pushed for the child to be fed through the tube. The station reported that doctors were perplexed as the child's condition seemed to improve and then regress.
An investigation eventually led authorities to believe the girl was poisoned with an alkaline substance, possibly Mean Green Degreaser cleaner, FOX-4 reported. Authorities also learned from a family member that Campbell-Goins had a bottle of fingernail polish remover in her bedroom and the girl's bedroom.
Campbell-Goins was also accused of medically abusing her son in 1999. The station reported that Campbell-Goins was forced to take parenting classes after she was caught over-medicating the boy.
