Matthew Livelsberger's ex-girlfriend said the troubled 20-year military veteran suspected of blowing up a Cybertruck outside of Donald Trump's hotel in Las Vegas.
"I failed him, we all failed him," Alicia Arritt, 39, told ABC News.
Livelsberger, a highly decorated military veteran, rented a Tesla Cybertruck in Colorado, drove it to Las Vegas, and blew it up New Year's Day in front of President-elect Trump's hotel. Authorities believe Livelsberger shot himself before the explosion.
Livelsberger had sought help for depression after deployments to Ukraine, Tajikistan, Georgia, Congo, and twice to Afghanistan, the AP reported. He received several commendations, including two Bronze Stars, a combat infantry badge, and an Army Commendation Medal with valor, the AP reported. Livelsberger was on approved leave when he died.
"He was really open about the trauma he faced," Arritt told ABC News. And the teammates he lost."
Livelsberger and Arritt had broken up in 2021 and had not communicated much before he began texting her Dec. 27. Livelsberger and his current wife, whom he has a baby with, were reportedly on the verge of getting divorced, the New York Post reported.
Arritt said she was shocked and saddened when police told her what had happened.
"My whole heart broke for him," she said. "That he was so broken that he got to that place."
