Germany must have been super psyched with their championship win in the recently concluded World Cup tournament held in Brazil. According to the German Football Association, the 2014 tournament winners accidentally chipped off a piece of the coveted World Cup trophy during revelries after they have won the Finals match against Argentina at 1-0 in extra time. Daily Mail noted that the Germans' last championship win was back in 1990.
The trophy, which was initially in Germany Captain Philipp Lahm's possession after their amazing win against Argentina early this month, was later on passed to every team member in the Maracana stadium. Even non-winner and celebrity Rihanna was able to take a snapshot of herself holding the trophy, which was unorthodox in terms of World Cup traditions. However, German FA president Wolfgang Niersbach told German newspaper Die Welt that the damage occurred when the players had showed it to fans back home.
He said, "At one point, a small piece of our World Cup trophy was chipped off. But do not worry, we have specialists on the case who can fix it. We have investigated persistently who it was that damaged the trophy, but the investigation was concluded without a result."
The damage on the golden trophy was of a concern. The original item, which weighs 5 kilograms and made from 75% 18-carat gold, was designed by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga. A gold-plated replica was handed out to the German team as FIFA does not allow winning teams to bring the original trophy back home for security reasons.
The World Cup trophy has been the subject of thefts in recent history, simply because of its prestige and the fact that it is made up of precious metal. The Jules Rimet trophy was stolen during a a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall just before the 1966 World Cup in England, Daily Mail said. The trophy was later found by a dog named Pickles just south of London.
