An Alabama Army veteran and family man was tragically stabbed to death on New Year's Eve, with police charging his former girlfriend and her son in connection to his death.

Earnest Christion Jr., 68, affectionately known as "Rickey," was a Birmingham resident who was deeply cherished for his humor, positivity, and devotion to his family, People reported.

On December 31, 2023, police responded to a 911 call at a home in Ensley, Birmingham, where they found Christion unresponsive with a stab wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was later pronounced dead.

"Rickey was more than just a veteran; he was a beacon of joy and love," a statement from his family read. "His sense of humor was infectious, and his ability to keep people smiling, even during difficult times, will always be remembered."

Following an investigation, Birmingham Police arrested 60-year-old Zingy Gamble, Christion's girlfriend, and her 40-year-old son, La Verne Gamble.

Authorities believe the fatal stabbing stemmed from a dispute over money. Zingy Gamble has been charged with murder, while her son faces a charge of hindering prosecution.

Both suspects were taken into custody at Birmingham Police Headquarters and remain in the Jefferson County Jail. Zingy Gamble is being held without bond, while her son's bond is set at $15,000.
