An Illinois family's Christmas morning turned to tragedy when a man shot and killed his sister-in-law after he mistook her for an intruder, according to a report.
Daniel Garcia, 52, of faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter of a family member, according to NBC-5.
The shooting occurred in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, about 40 minutes outside of the city. The shooting happened at about 7:15 a.m. Christmas morning. Garcia called 911 after shooting his sister-in-law, Kellie Barnett, the TV station reported.
Barnett was apparently staying in the guest bedroom and Garcia told police that he forgot that she was staying with them, the station reported.
Barnett's sister is Garcia's wife. NBC-5 reported that she told police she was woken by the sound of the gunshot and then ran to her sister who was on the ground just outside the couple's bedroom. Garcia told police that he kept a handgun in a holster on his side of the bed.
Garcia's next court date is scheduled for Jan. 17, WGN-9 reported. If convicted, he faces three to 14 years in prison.
