A Jan. 6 rioter who stormed the Capitol with his mother skipped out on his 9-month prison sentence and applied for asylum in Canada.
Indiana resident Antony Vo was charged as a nonviolent participant in the Capitol breach and was supposed to report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on June 14, 2024, to serve his sentence, according to WISH. But after criticizing the judge and court on social media by referring to it as a "kangaroo court," he reportedly fled to Canada, CBS News reported.
"The majority of Jan. 6 people have been held more than accountable," Vo told WISH.
He added that he believes President-elect Donald Trump will pardon rioters when he takes office next month and therefore does not plan to turn himself in.
"Our country, ourselves, we have a long history of standing up for our rights, what we believe in," he added.
The Canadian government has not confirmed it will not detain and send Vo back to the U.S. When asked for an update on Vo's refugee status, Canadian officials told WISH it cannot comment due to privacy legislation but added that one of the factors in evaluating a refugee claim is whether that person has committed a serious crime.
Prosecutors have also filed charges against Vo's mother, but her case is still pending.
