An 8-year-old Oklahoma girl remains unaccounted for after the car she was in got swept away by floodwaters in north Texas after a tragic Christmas Eve accident.
The girl was one of six passengers in an SUV that went off the road and into a drainage ditch around 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve. Sherman Police said the vehicle became engulfed in floodwaters. Rescue workers were then able to stop the vehicle which was being washed away and rescue four of the occupants, including a 5-year-old who was found underwater near a tree and unresponsive, police said in a press conference. They were able to revive the 5-year-old.
"It's amazing, just to be able to experience bringing that child back to life," Sherman Police Chief Jason Jeffcoat said. "In a tragic time like this still a glimpse of hope that God is good."
Will Robinson, the father, was killed in the accident. Police said in a press conference Friday that the other four family members are out of the hospital.
Rescue workers have been frantically searching for the girl despite being hampered by inclement weather at times. Sherman Texas police said that they deployed dozens of search teams in an effort to find her.
"We are incredibly humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and concern expressed for everyone involved," Sherman police said in a Facebook post. "Extensive searches have been ongoing...As of this time, efforts to locate the 8-year-old girl have not been successful."
"In crises like these, we are blessed to serve a community that so badly wants to help in any way they can. We have dozens of first responders involved in this search, many with extensive training in searching in hazardous conditions," Sherman Police added.
