The highest-ranking uniformed officer in the NYPD resigned on Friday after allegations of demanding sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for approving overtime.

Jeffrey Maddrey's resignation follows years of controversy during his career, which began in 1991, according to ABC 7 New York. He rose through the ranks to become Chief of Department in 2023, overseeing key crime-fighting and operational strategies.

Previous allegations of sexual misconduct, gender discrimination and interference in a 2021 arrest marred his tenure.

His accuser, Lt. Quathisha Epps, a top earner in the department, claims she faced coercion for years and retaliation when she resisted, prompting her suspension despite prior approvals of her overtime by Maddrey and other officials.

The allegations came to light as the New York Post prepared to publish an exposé. Epps filed a federal complaint accusing Maddrey of quid pro quo sexual harassment.

On Friday night, Maddrey resigned abruptly just hours before the story broke, with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch accepting his departure effective immediately.

John Chell, previously Chief of Patrol, was named interim Chief of Department, and Philip Rivera took over as interim Chief of Patrol.

The NYPD and city officials have pledged thorough investigations into the claims.
