A 14-year-old student and a 42-year-old staff member were killed Monday when 15-year-old Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow opened fire during a study hall at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, authorities said.
Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, of Madison, and Erin West, 42, of DeForest died in the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Vergara was a freshman at the school, while West was the substitute coordinator.
Vergara's obituary described her as an avid reader who loved art, singing and playing the keyboard in the family worship band. She had a special bond with her cat, Ginger, and her dog Coco, the obituary states.
The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow, 15, opened fire during a study hall at the school. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said there was no indication that Rupnow had specifically targeted anyone and that police are still investigating potential motives, the Journal Sentinel reported.
Six others were injured in the shooting, with two remaining in critical condition Thursday. The other four injured in the shooting, a teacher and three other students, were treated and released, according to the newspaper.
A funeral service for Vergara is planned for 11 a.m. at City Church, 4909 E. Buckeye Road, Madison, on Saturday, December 21, 2024. Family and friends who wish to view the service via can do so through the obituary page.
