Police have detained a California man who was exchanging messages with the teenage girl who committed a mass shooting at private Christian school in Madison on Monday.

Alexander Paffendorf was allegedly messaging Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow, the 15-year-old who killed a teacher and another student while wounding six in a shooting Monday.

Here's all we know about Paffendorf:

  • He is 20-years-old and from Carlsbad, California.
  • Paffendorf was detained after an emergency gun violence restraining order was issued, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
  • This is a civil action, not a criminal action, But the order does allow officers to seize weapons, CBS 8 reported.
  • The order doesn't reference any specific target and it was issued under California's red flag gun law Tuesday night which would require Paffendorf to turn over to authorities all guns and ammunitions within a 48 hour period, The New York Post reported.
  • Neighbors were shocked by the police activity: "They had their full guns out all over the street. There were cop cars. I'd say about 15 cops here. I saw them carrying out the big box. I didn't see them arrest anybody, but they gave high-fives as it came to an end," neighbor Alex Gallegos told CBS 8.
