The parents of a 10-year-old boy who killed himself have sued his school district, claiming his teachers were "repeatedly informed" but "did nothing," according to the lawsuit.
The wrongful death lawsuit filed against the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation stated that Sammy Tuesch was verbally and physically bullied, as his classmates reportedly called him names, punched and choked him, as reported by WFYI.
Tuesch's family claimed in the lawsuit that several students had previously told Sammy that he should hang himself.
The bullying is said to have started soon after Tuesch's family moved to Greenfield, Indiana, in November 2022. On May 5 of this year, the fourth grader committed suicide in his bedroom, as reported by PEOPLE.
"Sammy was smart, funny, quick to make friends, knew no strangers, meant no harm to anyone, and had the biggest heart along with the best smile," Sam Teusch, Sammy's father, told WRTV. "And it seems that made him an easy target and easy for school officials to dismiss and disregard him – and we can't let the world be like that."
The lawsuit filed by Sammy's parents claim that although staff were "repeatedly informed" about the torment their son was reportedly facing, they "did nothing," as reported by PEOPLE.
"This suit is about more than holding the Greenfield School Corporation accountable, it's about making sure no child ever experiences what Sammy experienced – and no family again experiences the heartbreak the Teusch family can now never escape," Brian Grossman, an attorney for the family, said in a statement obtained by the Daily Reporter.
The school district declined to comment on the lawsuit to WFYI, the Daily Reporter and WRTV.
The family is seeking damages as well as covering legal costs.
