Luigi Mangione has been indicted on murder charges for fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Tuesday.

Prosecutors stated that a New York grand jury indicted Mangione, 26, on charges of first- and second-degree murder, along with other related offenses, in connection with the brutal killing of the 50-year-old CEO outside a Midtown hotel on December 4, according to the New York Post

"We allege that Luigi Mangione carried out the brazen, targeted and fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan," Bragg said.

"This type of premeditated, targeted gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated, and my office has been working day in and day out to bring the defendant to justice."

Mangione is being held on murder and weapons-related charges at State Correctional Institution Huntingdon in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Earlier last week, Mangione refused to waive his extradition. As a result, prosecutors said it may take up to 45 days to get him back in New York.

Mangione's frustration over personal and systemic grievances fueled his manifesto and led to an elaborate plot.

On December 4, Mangione allegedly shot Thompson, 50, outside a Manhattan hotel during an investor event. Mangione was captured days later at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was found with a 3D-printed gun, a silencer, fake IDs and documents outlining his plan.
